First Date Tips For Singles

Need a kick to your dating life?

We thought so! What better way to re-ignite that fire than to brush up on some first date tips from the people who do this for a living?

Events & Adventures has been helping relationships blossom for over 30 years. You’d be amazed at how easy it is to create a spark just by putting singles together in activities they all enjoy. However, dating is not always an exact science, and there is no magic formula. The recent COVID-19 uncertainty has also put a damper on romance, forcing all of us to reconsider how we approach relationships. But the good news is, the world is slowly returning to normal and summer romances are just on the horizon!

Here are 10 first date tips to bring with you into your summer dating scene, whether you are in a group setting or having one-on-one time with someone special.

Be Confident & Friendly

No one likes a big ego, but confidence is very attractive! Group events may seem intimidating; however, it’s quite simple! Just introduce yourself! In this setting, it’s completely normal, even encouraged, to just approach people and start conversations. Share something about yourself and ask others to do the same. A friendly attitude and a willingness to get to know others show confidence and good spirits.

Keep Conversation Light

Some people have a tendency to overshare. Keep the conversation to what’s going on around you. Luckily, at Events & Adventures, you’ll have plenty to discuss whether you’re sight-seeing on a kayaking trip or taking in the nature during a hike. Try to avoid any “ex” topics. A relationship doesn’t seem appealing if the other person is still holding on to the old one.  Leave the resentments in the past and work on something new with the singles you’re meeting now.

Choose Common Ground

Found someone you’re interested in? Try inviting them to an off-site date where you can have some alone time. The first date should always be somewhere you both feel comfortable. Usually, a public setting, like a coffee shop, restaurant, or other fun outing is best practice. You can even leave the intimate dinner date for later, and choose a more interesting outing like a trip to the aquarium. You should have a pretty solid understanding of what your dates interests are, based on where you meet them at Events &Adventures!

The Dreaded Check

WHO PAYS?? A contentious topic, but a necessary one. Traditionally, the man pays. However, ladies, come prepared to split the check just in case. Gentlemen, if you’d like to impress your date, you should pay.

Turn Off Your Phone

This is a no-brainer! If you can’t leave business to rest for an hour or two, wait until you have a day where you can. Should an emergency arise, excuse yourself, and be brief. Don’t let anything take your attention from your date.

Don’t Default to the Bar

This is an easy mistake to make. Of course, drinks might seem like a casual choice with easy conversation, but it shows no effort on your part. Drinks often lead to both parties not being their true self, and can even turn sloppy if you’re not careful. If you’re really trying to get to know someone, a crowded bar is not the place. Events & Adventures has a ton of activities outside the bar scene that will spark your next first date idea.

Don’t “Play It Cool”

One of the most important first date tips is to try to be authentic! Acting like you don’t care isn’t cool, it actually makes your date feel insecure and uncomfortable. If you’re interested, then show that interest by asking your date about themselves, paying attention, and actively responding in the conversation.

Avoid Trigger Topics

There’s a time and place to discuss politics and a first date is not it! Even if you think the other person may potentially have similar views or they voice agreement, just steer the conversation into somewhere else. This can lead an uncomfortable situation or even an argument. Same goes for hot topics like religion, sex, or anything too controversial. The first date is for fun conversation and lighthearted laughs, not political views.

Asking for a Second Date

This one can be tough to navigate but try to keep it simple. As a rule of thumb, wait to ask for a second date until after your first date has already ended and the person has gone home. Express that you had a great time, and let them know you’ll be in touch. Asking during the date can make things slightly uncomfortable, especially if you’re judging the date incorrectly. Wait until you and the date have had time to think over the night and reach out to them the next day if you are too excited to wait!

Don’t Give Up

One bad date is not a good reason to get down on yourself or to give up the dating scene altogether. There is someone out there for everyone, and sitting in your house won’t get you any closer to meeting them. Events & Adventures will help you meet eligible singles just doing things you love. So, you don’t have to crawl the bars or swipe aimlessly through profiles. Just go do what you love, and meet other singles who love those things too!

river rafting with Events & Adventures Midwest

River Rafting with Events & Adventures Midwest

Go River Rafting With Events & Adventures!

The Events & Adventures Chicago and Minneapolis clubs celebrated Labor Day weekend at Wildman Adventure Resort for a three-day river rafting adventure. Wildman Adventure Resort is located along the Menominee and Peshtigo Rivers along the Wisconsin and Michigan borders. The members had the choice of staying in either a cabin or tent, making it a perfect location for the white water river rafting weekend.

The first day was laid back as the members started to trickle in from Chicago and Minneapolis. The clubs started to mingle as they went on the hunt for their respective room assignments. Everyone formed quick friendships as tent and cabin mates got to know one another at dinner and throughout the first night of the trip.

The second day started off as any rafting trip should—on the Menominee River.

Members were put into teams of eight to ten people and boarded their respective rafts. Each group had an exhilarating river rafting adventure along the rapids, with a raft or two experiencing a topsy-turvy ride! The morning was a bonding and unforgettable experience for every member involved. Once the rafting groups finished out their time on the Menominee, the fun wasn’t over yet. Members had the choice of either zip lining or playing paintball.

Half of the members strapped in for the rides of their lives and soared through the treetops of the Wisconsin wilderness. The remaining members of the Chicago and Minneapolis clubs enjoyed an afternoon of colorful and healthy competition as they battled it out on the paintball fields. It was explosive day, to say the least. The day winded down with dinner by the campfire.

The members played games, ate s’mores, and enjoyed laughing together while sharing stories around the campfire.

The final day was spent river rafting on the amazing Peshtigo River. Compared to the Menominee, the Peshtigo is a relatively smaller river. However, the current was much stronger and definitely a bigger challenge to overcome. Members were given the chance to test their endurance in single kayak rafts and cheered each other on as they battled the rapids.

The Chicago and Minneapolis crews will never forget the river rafting adventures they had together or the relaxing time spent enjoying the natural beauty of Wisconsin. There’s nothing quite like jumping on a raft, riding through rapids, and sleeping under the stars to bring a group of great people closer together. This trip was the perfect way to close out the summer and is a Labor Day these members will never forget. We look forward to Events & Adventures next great event, who knows where we’ll be traveling to next!

facebook dating feature

Facebook Plans to Launch Dating Feature for Singles

How Will The Facebook Dating Feature Compare To Other Platforms?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Facebook will be invading the singles space with the release of their new Facebook dating feature. This move was seemingly inevitable, as Facebook had already become a source for building romantic relationships for some users. With the incredible amount of data that Facebook has on each user, it’s reasonable to say that they have a strong foundation for such an initiative. However, how this new feature will zdistinguish itself from other dating apps remains the question.

Like most dating apps, Facebook dating will feature a typical “swipe and like” type interface

Based on photos and descriptions, singles will get to decide if they’d like to start an electronic conversation with a fellow user. Although Facebook will automatically match singles with those who share commonalities, users are simply given photos and basic information to make their decisions. Zuckerberg hopes that singles will be able to cultivate real, long-term relationships using this new feature.

Nevertheless, the Facebook dating feature is not a groundbreaking concept. Attempting to start relationships with other singles via apps and online dating profiles has become the modern way of doing things. In order to meet the demand of a culture driven by social media, several electronic dating platforms have surfaced, including Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, to name a few.

Although these options are convenient, they may not be the best way to meet other singles. As you’ve probably heard someone complain, people don’t always look like their picture in real life. Real human interaction reveals traits and characteristics that simply can’t be translated through a dating app. After all, compatibility is best measured when you’re connecting with others face to face.

What if we went back to the oldfashioned way of doing things – building true, long-term relationships in person

Events & Adventures offers a better way to meet singles in a relaxed and fun environment. Unlike the new Facebook dating feature, this social club joins people together through exciting events and group activities. From traveling the world to a casual night out, there’s always something to do and someone to meet! With over 30 events per month to choose from, including wine tasting, horseback riding, dance parties and more, members are never bored. e&a wine tasting and grape stomping with Events & Adventures Bay Area.

Wine Tasting with Events & Adventures

Wine Tasting with the singles from Events & Adventures is just minutes away.

Just a few miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge is the world famous wine country of Northern California, which includes over 500 different wineries.  Napa and Sonoma are only a short drive away, and it’s now harvest season, the time of year when all the vines are filled with grapes and you can smell the wine fermenting in the air.  What better time to pay a visit for some wine tasting!  But this year, instead of spending a weekend just wine tasting, Events & Adventures got down and dirty by actually making some wine the old-fashioned way—stomping some grapes!  Several Napa Valley wineries offer experiences to truly write home about, including mushing the grapes with your feet Lucy and Ethyl-style.

Events & Adventures members got to stomp grapes, taste wine, and take home a t-shirt with their grape feet imprint. So how do you Grape Stomp, you’re wondering?  Well, for all of you looking to Grape Stomp before the end of the season here are five things you need to know.

  1. Plan Your Outfit Accordingly

Don’t let anything get in the way of winning, including your clothes!  The main event of a grape stomp involves trying to mash out as much juice as possible with your feet.  This process can be quite messy, and you’ll end up with sticky grape juice all over your legs.  Resist the urge to wear your cutest maxi dress or a new pair of pants and stick with something that you’re comfortable getting messy.

  1. Get Creative with Your Clothing

Speaking of outfits, plan your group’s costumes ahead of time, as most grape stomp events give prizes to the best and most creative costumes.  Team apparel can range from matching t-shirts to full-blown costumes, and creativity always counts!

  1. Stay Hydrated

This may be our most important tip of all! The majority of grape stomp events take place outside in August and September, when temperatures in Napa Valley often exceed 90 degrees. Grape stomps are usually held at a winery, and there is often plenty of wine available for tasting as well. So drink up!

  1. Bring Your Camera

This is an event that you’re going to want to document, so bring your camera (or cell phone) with you! Some favorite shots from previous events include pre and post-stomping photos, group costume shots and, of course, action shots during the stomping.

  1. Have Fun!

Diving into a barrel of grapes and making a mess with your feet isn’t something you get to do every day, so make the most of it! Get messy, stomp as fast as you can and don’t forget to have fun.

Events & Adventures in the Bay Area makes it easy to find fun new things to do, like grape-stomping!  If you don’t feel like you’re experiencing to the fullest, give us a holler and find out why hundreds of other singles join us for great events like wine tasting every single week.
